Some red MTC buses are to be turned pink for women travellers

Free travel in MTC buses are provided by the Government and these buses are in pink.

To improve travel options for women in Chennai, the Metropolitan Transport Corporation (MTC) is repainting certain red deluxe buses in pink. Most older pink buses, previously painted only at the front and back, are being phased out as they wear down.

While new blue BSVI buses are now designated for pink service, there may be a temporary shortage until the next batch arrives. To address demand, some red buses, usually operating at higher fares, will be converted to pink for regular services, with select buses from over 30 depots scheduled for repainting.

K. Anbazhagan, general secretary of the TN Transport Workers' Federation, supported the initiative, noting that many existing pink buses are barely functional. He emphasized the need to improve maintenance across the red bus fleet, as spare parts shortages often delay essential repairs.
