Chennai’s suburban rail commuters face severe overcrowding on the Chennai Beach–Chengalpattu route, with even first-class compartments packed beyond capacity. The 60-km stretch, serving 28 stations, is a key transit corridor, yet passengers complain about inadequate train frequency, particularly beyond Tambaram.
A major issue is the one-hour service gap after 9.51 am, forcing commuters to board early trains, worsening congestion. While trains operate every 20–30 minutes in peak hours, the next direct Chengalpattu-bound train from Chennai Beach is only at 10.56 am.
Passengers also express frustration over first-class compartments being as crowded as general ones. Many question the value of expensive tickets when comfort remains the same. Commuter groups urge Southern Railways to increase frequency and extend Tambaram-bound trains to Chengalpattu to ease pressure.
Adding to their woes, passengers allege that suburban trains are frequently delayed to accommodate express trains, despite the commissioning of a third track to separate services.
A railway official, responding to complaints, stated that the schedule was designed based on demand patterns. Maintenance is prioritized in the morning gap, but no formal complaints have been received. Officials assured that concerns would be reviewed if raised collectively.
Reports indicate that Southern Railways has removed 60 out of 750 suburban train services due to track maintenance and station upgrades, exacerbating commuter distress. Calls for immediate intervention continue to grow.
