Kundrathur Couple’s Home Delivery Guided by WhatsApp Group Sparks Health Concerns

Chennai: In a startling incident, a Kundrathur couple delivered their child at home, relying solely on advice from a WhatsApp group called Home Birth Experiences, which has over 1,000 members. The couple, Manoharan, 36, an earthmover operator, and his wife Sukanya, 32, opted for a completely unassisted delivery, raising alarm among health authorities.

The family, which includes two daughters aged 8 and 4, lives in Nandambakkam. When Sukanya went into labor on November 17, Manoharan referred to illustrations and advice from the WhatsApp group instead of seeking medical assistance. Sukanya had avoided all prenatal checkups during her pregnancy.

Following the delivery, the couple shared photos with their newborn in the WhatsApp group, which quickly gained attention online. The incident prompted an investigation by health officials and police into the activities of the group and the potential risks associated with promoting unassisted home births.

Authorities are now emphasizing the dangers of avoiding medical supervision during pregnancy and childbirth, warning that such practices can jeopardize the health of both mother and child.
